New Canaan Police responded to the area of 97 Spring Water Lane on Tuesday, Jan. 22 around 11:30 p.m. on the report of a single-vehicle crash.
Further investigation revealed that the driver, 60-year-old Richard Stewart, had struck a tree after traveling off of the road and landed in a ditch, New Canaan Police said.
During police’s interview with Stewart, officers say they noticed the odor of alcohol coming from his mouth. Based on this evidence and the nature of the crash, Stewart was transported to Norwalk ER for a medical evaluation.
Police obtained a search and arrest warrant based on the investigation, charging Stewart with DUI.
Stewart surrendered himself to New Canaan Police on Thursday, Feb. 21 around 6:45 p.m. He was processed and charged before posting his $2,500 bond and getting released. Stewart is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, March 4.
